Chapter Nine

“Mom, are you awake?” A light rap in the dark startled Belle from her slumber.

Apparently she’d been napping. She was stretched out on her bed, covered with a wool throw while the TV mounted on the facing wall murmured the evening news. “I only meant to close my eyes.”

“Well, you’ve had them closed for nearly three hours.” Violet sailed into the room. “Lupita has supper ready.”

“I smell her enchiladas. How I’ve missed them.” She pushed up into sitting position, sniffing the air faintly redolent of cheese and spices. “Did she make her Spanish rice?”

“And refried beans. She went all out for your first meal home.”

“I need to thank her. That woman is like family.”

“She had to leave early. She had a church thing.” Violet rescued the cane from where it leaned against the wall. “Don’t tell me you left this over here and walked all the way to the bed without it.”

“It was what, three or four steps?”

“You’re cheating, Mom. The doctor said not to push too hard, that could backfire on you. You don’t want your leg to stay like this, right?” Violet held out the cane.

“Don’t think for one second our roles have reversed, young lady.” Although she was proud of Violet, who had come into her own. “I’m the one who gives orders around here.”

“Sure, sure. We’ll see how that works for you.” Amusement quirked the corners of her mouth. Violet nearly always smiled these days. Love could do that to a girl.

“Will Brian be eating with us?” She took the cane and stood, obediently using the thing properly, the way her physical therapist had shown her. “Or will he be busy at the clinic?”

“He’s only working mornings.” Violet shrugged. “That’s all I know. So yes, he’ll be here to enjoy Lupita’s enchiladas, which are not to be missed. Let’s get you downstairs.”

“I don’t need a nanny, sweetheart. Go ahead without me. I’ll be down in a minute.”

“Okay, you just look tired, Mom. You came home, you wanted to do this and see that and wound up doing too much walking.”

“That’s not why I’m tired, honey.” She shuffled her lethargic left leg forward, not sure she wanted to talk about some of the things weighing on her. “I have a lot on my mind. Do you forgive me for not telling you about your dad?”

“I understand why, but honestly, all this time I thought he had abandoned us. It would have helped to know that he didn’t want to let us go. That somewhere out there he still cared for us.”

“Cared? He loves you very much. It’s why Maddie and Grayson stayed with him. How could I ask him to give up all his children?” She sighed heavily. “I know he loves you as much as I do. It would have killed me to lose all four of you. I didn’t want him to lose that much.”

“I do understand. You couldn’t risk Jack and me trying to find our dad.”

“Or your other halves.” Belle hesitated at the top of the stairs, which were tricky.
